Acronychia, Plant Profile and Landscaping Uses

Acronychia are a widespread genus that are related to citrus trees. A number of species are used in landscaping although not widely. Most are shrubs to small trees and many have scented foliage. Some species such as Acronychia acidula are used in skin treatments. Others are used as evergreen landscaping trees and shrubs.

Most species have glossy foliage that is fragrant when crushed or brushed against. Many have small edible fruits with a citrus taste. All flower in summer, most with small white to cream flowers followed by the fruit which are ready to pick in Autumn. They attract bees, birds and Swallowtail Butterflies to the garden.

Acronychia varieties

  • A. oblongifolia is found in the coastal ranges from southern Queensland to Eastern Victoria. A medium sized tree to around 25m in height on maturity. Becoming rare in its natural environment.
  • A. littoralis or ‘Scented Acronychia’ is found in coastal areas of Northern New South Wales to Southern Queensland. Two forms, the southern and northern forms, both are smaller growing trees to around 5 – 7 m. Foliage releases a frangrance when crushed.
  • A. octandra has the common name of ‘Doughwood’. Small attractive white flowers in spring. Reaching around 20 – 25m in height with a slightly buttressed trunk this is a fast growing species in good soils with good moisture. Found in rainforest areas from Northern New South Wales to Southern Queensland.
  • A. acidula or ‘Lemon Aspen’ is related to citrus, its fruit is used widely.
  • A. pubescens or ‘Hairy Acronychia’ and
  • A. wilcoxiana or ‘Silver Aspen’ is a fast growing small tree to around 15m in height.
  • A. pauciflora is a small tree to around 10m in height, Norther NSW to South East Queensland.
  • Acronychia imperforata or ‘Logan Apple’ is probably the best known of the genus.
