Plants for Privacy and Wind Protection

Hedging Plants
Hedging Plants

Hedging plants are used widely in landscaping, as wind breaks, screens and as formal elements in the garden, such as borders or dividers. With so many types of plants suitable to use as hedges a little thought needs to go into selection.

They can add shape and line to a garden as well as serve as a barrier to traffic or perhaps act as an ornamental garden hedge. Buxus varieties are used widely for low hedges and conifers as higher hedges. But consider native varieties such as the Lilly Pilly and Acacia Cognata as a great hedging alternative.

Fast Growing Hedging Plants

If you are looking for a fast growing screen or hedge consider Plumbago Capensis for a lower hedge(2-3m), Lilly Pilly( Acmena smithii, Sygygium Leumanhii or Weeping Lilly Pilly, and Sygygium Hinterland Gold) to 5m depending on cultivar, Pittosporum tenuifolium (will grow at 1m a year) also cultivars such as Pittosporum tenuifolium ‘Silver Sheen’ and the popular Cupressus Leightons Green.

Australian Native Hedges

Again the Lilly Pillies are great and Acacia cognata species make great evergreen hedges, especially the low growing cultivars. Others include Hakea salicifolia or ‘Willow leafed Hake’ and Dodonaea viscosa or ‘Hop Bush’.

Box Hedges

Buxus are the most well know hedging plants and are widely used in landscaping applications around the world.

Flowering Evergreen Hedges

Magnolia Grandiflora cultivars such as ‘Little Gem’, ‘Kay Parris’ and ‘Teddy Bear’. Michelia doltsopa are a magnolia related species that also do well as hedges. Camellias make great hedging plants, not as fast growing and as tall as other but very effective and tough.

Low growing Hedging Plants

Try something different, Lavender, Rosemary, Santolina or again the Acacia cognata cultivars.
