Lithops optica is one of the most striking and collector-focused living stones. Native to southern Namibia, this species is prized for its smooth, rounded leaf pairs and rare, highly decorative colour forms, including the famous ‘Rubra’.

While slightly more sensitive than some other Lithops species, Lithops optica rewards attentive growers with vivid colour, reliable flowering, and a striking sculptural appearance in pots.

Description & Characteristics

Lithops optica forms compact, paired leaves that resemble small stones, an adaptation that helps it survive in its rocky natural habitat.

Key features:

  • Leaf pairs are smooth, oval, and often uniform in colour
  • Colours range from grey, pale green, or pinkish tones, with rare deep red-purple forms (Rubra)
  • Top surface may feature a subtle window or fine markings
  • Flowers are typically white, emerging from the central fissure in late summer to autumn

Its sculptural form and vivid colours make it a favourite among collectors and display growers.

How to Grow Lithops optica

Lithops optica requires similar care to other Lithops species but is slightly less forgiving, especially regarding water and sunlight.

Light

  • Bright light is essential for colour and compact growth
  • 5–6 hours daily of bright morning or filtered sun is ideal
  • Avoid strong afternoon sun in hot climates to prevent stress or sunburn

Soil

  • Must be grown in free-draining soil
  • Use a succulent or cactus mix with added coarse sand, pumice, or grit
  • Terracotta pots with large drainage holes are recommended
  • A top dressing of small stones protects the leaf base

Watering

  • Water only during active growth (spring and autumn)
  • Keep almost completely dry during summer dormancy and winter
  • Allow the soil to dry fully between waterings

Fertiliser

  • Rarely required
  • If desired, apply a very light feed once per year, preferably slow-release

Flowering

Lithops optica is a reliable bloomer under the right conditions:

  • Flowers emerge from the central fissure between the leaf pairs
  • Usually white in colour, sometimes slightly fragrant
  • Flowering occurs late summer to autumn, often exceeding the size of the plant body

Propagation

Lithops optica can be propagated by:

From Seed

  • Sow in sandy, well-draining soil
  • Keep slightly moist until germination
  • Germination can take 3–12 months and may be irregular

By Division

  • Mature plants sometimes form small clumps
  • Gently separate during repotting
  • Allow offsets to dry before replanting

Seed-grown plants often show subtle variations in colour and markings, which is part of their collector appeal.

Recommended Varieties & Forms

Lithops optica is prized for its colourful and collectible forms:

  • Lithops optica var. optica – Classic grey-green form with subtle windows
  • Lithops optica ‘Rubra’ – Rare red-purple form; highly sought after by collectors
  • Lithops optica ‘Albinica’ – Pale-bodied form with smooth tops
  • Lithops optica var. pienaarii – Slightly elongated, often cream to pink tones
  • Lithops optica var. venteri – Rare, darker-bodied form with clean edges

Colour and pattern intensity depends on light exposure, soil, and watering, making each plant unique.

Common Problems & Tips

  • Overwatering → soft or translucent leaves; repot into dry mix
  • Insufficient light → pale or elongated growth
  • Splitting → normal growth process; reduce watering while old leaves are replaced
  • Ensure good airflow to prevent fungal issues in humid environments

Why Grow Lithops optica?

  • Striking, smooth sculptural leaves ideal for display
  • Collector favourite, especially Rubra forms
  • Reliable flowering when grown correctly
  • Performs well in pots and indoor collections
  • Adds colour, rarity, and prestige to any Lithops collection
