Salvia Plants vary in flower color, foliage and size, and with over 900 species the genus has a lot to offer gardeners.

These are a perennial plant that have a low water requirement, flowering summer through to autumn, they love a sunny position and attract birds to the garden.

These plants are a member of the mint family, and commonly called sage, huge range of foliage types and flower colours. They are a tough evergreen plant and easy care.

Frost Tolerant Salvias

Some species are regarded as frost tolerant and some are not. If you are looking for frost tolerant species try, Salvia buchananii, leucantha and villosa, all hardy evergreen salvias.

Deciduous Salvia Species

Some varieties are not evergreen, such as Salvia verticillata, azura and patens.

Salvia Plants for Tropical Climates

Salvias plants suitable for tropical and subtropical climates include: Salvia concolor, discolor, iodantha, patens, sessia and wagneriana.

Salvia Plants for Culinary uses include:

  • Culinary Sage, (Salvia officinalis) probably the most widely used salvia for cooking, used in roasts, Tuscan and Italian cooking. Sage butter sauce is popular.
  • Salvia rosmarinus – Yes Rosemary has been reclassified as a Salvia
  • Pineapple Sage, ( Salvia elegens) used for desserts and flavouring drinks
  • Salvia fruticosa, used for sage tea.
  • Chia (Salvia hispanica) seeds are used in baking, Chia sprouts are used in salads in a similar way to other sprouts
