If you like Salvias you will love Salvia ‘Amante’ , and this gem is named after the Spanish word for lover ‘Amante’.
This is a new release and is a S. guaranties x S. gesnerifolia hybrid. The flowers are a Fuchsia red with a contrasting deep purple to near black calyx.
Like many Salvia varieties this is a versatile plant that will grow well from sub tropical climates through to cool Mediterranean zones. In warmer climates it is long flowering, almost year round. In cooler areas it may go into a dormant phase in winter.
Garden Uses
Being a plant with low water requirement and also attracting bees and birds to the garden, Salvia ‘Amante’ can find a place in the garden border or even be grown in pots in a sunny courtyard.
Being a taller growing plant that will reach over 1m (3ft) in height you can use it as a low hedge or screen.
Salvia ‘Amante’ Care
Best planted in a sunny position in a humus rich well drained soil.
Deadhead after flowering to encourage more flowers.
Prune back in winter or early spring to maintain a bushy growth habit.’
Mulch around the plant each spring adding some fertiliser at the same time.
