Our Best Trees for the Australian Garden

Any list of top ten trees is subject to a little debate. The trees we have selected all have different qualities, some have great flowers others are tops for screening or are great for shade. These are not trees that are difficult to grow in the right conditions, which makes them favourites in gardens across Australia.

Choosing the right tree.

It depends as to what you are looking for in a tree to see if it is the best choice for your garden. It might be all about size, shade, flowers or screening.

Our selection gives you a few starting points in your search for the right tree for your garden.

Our Top Ten Trees are.

  1. Crape myrtle Lagerstroemia indica
    Crape myrtle tree are available in many flower colours from white through to purple, dwarf cultivars are also available. A top tree because its drought tolerant, handles full sun, has great flowers as well as good autumn colour. will reach 8m in ideal conditions depending on soil, climate and cultivar.
  2. Leyland cypress Cupressocyparis leylandii
    This on is tops for privacy or screening trees. Does well in full sun to part shade, and grows at 1m a year in the right conditions. The Leyland Cypress creates a thick screen that will grow to over 20m depending on cultivar and conditions.

  3. Maidenhair Tree Ginkgo Biloba
    A great deciduous tree suited to many situations. The Ginkgo tree has very attractive green foliage and a nice symmetrical growth habit.
  4. Ornamental Pears Pyrus calleryana
    Starting to become overused but still a very attractive flowering shade tree. Lots of different Pyrus cultivars, some more upright than others.
  5. Japanese Maples Acer palmatum
    Very attractive foliage and great autumn colour, Acer palmatum ‘Dissectum Seiryu’  is a favorite, an upright cut leaf maple, very nice foliage.
  6. Zelkova
    A great shade tree, sometimes called the ‘Japanese elm’
  7. Ilawarra Flame Tree Brachychiton acerifolius. 
    Fantastic flowers, a when in full flower the Ilawarra Flame Tree is stunning tree ornamental tree.
  8. Gleditsia triacanthos
    Drought tolerant and nice Autumn foliage 
  9. Weeping Cherry Prunus x subhirtella ‘Pendula Rubra’
    Again fantastic cascade of flowers in spring, a great feature tree in any garden.
  10. Magnolia Felix and other Deciduous magnolias
    With large colorful red flowers this is an outstanding ornamental tree.
