Rose Plants and Nurseries in Perth and WA
The best roses for Western Australia will depend a little on your soil, so if you have great soil, enhanced with lots of compost and well rotted manure then you will be looking at different roses to a gardener who has poor sandy soil. And all of this related to the rootstock rather than the rose variety itself.
In the West, ‘Best Roses’ are all about the soil and / or the rootstock
What has rootstock got to do with growing roses in Perth? In simple terms some rootstocks are better suited to Western Australian soils and climate than others. The rootstock is what the rose varieties fare grafted onto and for much of Perth and WA , Fortuniana is the one to look for. This is a hybrid between Rosa Laevigata and and Rosa Banksia, two very tough rose species. Its not as good in cold climates but is the best for the warm WA climate and the poor soils.
Other advantages of this type are that it is a vigorous fibrous type that will form a tap root, the best for Western Australian soils. Also it is more resistant to diseases including Phytophtora and pests such as nematodes.
So why do some roses come on other rootstocks?
Fairly simply it is easier to graft a rose onto a “Dr Huey” type rootstock, and therefore cheaper.
Just make sure that the graft is well above the soils level when you plant it.
So the best roses for Western Australia will depend a lot on your soil. If you have amended the soil so it is humus rich, then the best is whatever you like. If you soil is poor, then the best is still whatever you like but on Fortuniana rootstock. It will cost more, but probably be a longer lasting more prolific rose, and that is the best type.
