WHOLESALE JABOTICABA NURSERIES
A fascinating fruit tree with fruit that grows directly in the trunk Jaboticaba, sometimes spelled Jaboticaba is more correctly named Jabuticabeira. This a tree from Brazil hence the common name Brazilian Grape Tree. The botanical name is Myrciara cauliflora.
The fruit that form on the trunk are a deep purple and do look a lot like grapes. They are used to eat fresh, make jellies and preserves as well as for making wine.
Another tree that has fruit in the ‘superfoods’ category, they are very slow growing however are also a good ornamental tree for tropical to sub tropical gardens.
Small white flowers form after heavy rain, and the trees can be induced to flower through irrigation. The flowers are followed by the fruit.
If planted as seedling Jaboticaba will take between 5 and 8 years to produce good crops, however the unique fruit may be worth the wait. Trees will reach around 5m in height over time with a spread of 4m. They can be pruned to form a smaller compact tre or even a hedge if required.
Best grown in warmer climates in a fertile soil. Mulch well around the tree to maintain a cool root run.
Although Jaboticaba perfome best in warmer climates they will tolerate colder conditions. They would grow in Sydney, however fruiting would be limited.
