How to Grow Fruit Trees
Fruit trees are sun lovers (nearly all of them) a sunny warm position with at least 8 hours sun a day is essential if fruit is to set and ripen
- Nearly all fruiting trees need protection from birds (try bird netting), from frost (choose where you plant) and from strong wind (maybe plant a wind break or choose a sheltered position)
- Mulch beneath fruit trees to provide a moist cool root run and prevent weeds
- Many fruit trees do well in pots or containers, especially dwarf fruit trees and citrus trees, pomegranate trees also do well in containers
- Fruit needs to be picked, otherwise if left to fall and rot you will encourage disease, leaves also need to be raked up.
- A well drained humus rich moist soil is best for fruit trees, heavy clay soils and very sandy soils need to be amended.
- Pruning Fruit trees is an important task. Fruit trees are best pruned in winter.
