Wholesale Cherimoya Plants

Cherimoya sometimes called Custard Apples are a semi deciduous tree that will grow well commercially as far south as Sydney, as well is warmer pockets further south. A fast growing fruit tree reaching to around 5-7m depending on conditions . They  are a different plant to Custard Apples and will grow well in cooler climates

When it comes to taste, it is like a mixture of pineapple, banana and mango. We think it is best eaten by itself, perhaps with ice-cream, this lets the natural taste shine through. Also said to have a hint of strawberry and even papaya. The fruit needs to be eaten within a day or two of ripening to get the best taste.

Remove the seeds and skin first, you will then be left with the wonderful sweet and aromatic flesh.

Varieties

African Pride is one of the main varieties grown in Australia, it is early fruiting and will crop well without the need for hand pollination.

Cherimoya varieties include Fino de jete, Sofia and Pierce. Valued for fruit production they are widely grown in Spain as well as California, so think Mediterranean climate.

Best described as tasting like a Custard apple, but juicier they have a pleasant fragrance and can be eaten fresh or chilled.

Fruit is large green with ‘dimples’, sort of strawberry shaped, and heavy. Fruit is ready to pick when it begins to lighten in color a little, they ripen further after harvest. Best not refrigerated, a cool store is more appropriate.

A humus rich well drained soil is best, protection from frost is essential and remember that some varieties need to be hand pollinated for best fruit production.

For successful growth these trees require moisture especially during the growing season.

Pruning is advisable as the branches are a little prone to snap under the weight of fruit if left to grow to long. Use normal practices here, remove crossover branches, cut back new growth on Cherimoya by 1/2 or more.
