The Chinese Grapefruit.
Also known as the Chinese Grapefruit, Pomelo Trees or Pummelo, are a citrus with perhaps the largest fruit of all. This is Citrus grandis or Citrus maxima, and it does have sweeter fruit than the grapefruit. The thick skin is often used to make marmalade.
These are an evergreen tree that come from China through to Vietnam and neighbouring countries. Although they are widely regarded as a tropical fruit tree , some varieties do grow well in southern states if they are grown are in a protected position. The classic example is the tree found in the Chinese Museum at Bendigo which does bear fruit. Varieties are grown commercially in Victoria.
Tree size will vary depending on variety, however it is the rootstock that the Pomelo is grafted onto that is more of a determining factor with size.
An number of varieties are becoming available including a seedless type.

- Pomelo Nam Roi – Also available in a dwarf variety – from Vietnam.
- Pomelo K – 15 – Smaller fruit than some however one of the best varieties.
How to Grow Pomelo Trees Basic Care
- Well drained soil to prevent root problems
- Best in warmer climates to maintain sweetness in the fruit.
- Reaches around 8m in height
- Best in a humus rich fertile soil
- Will produce 2 – 3 crops in sub tropical climates.
