Best plants for flowers year round.

Every gardener likes flowers, and long flowering plants are a particular attraction. Which the right plants, and the right climate you can have flowers almost year round. Our list of plants that flower for an extended period can provide any garden with almost continual colour.

Over the years we have looked at plants that will repeat flower through the season. Some that will send up a second flush if they are pruned after flowering. And those that are just naturally long flowering. Three real winners stand out, and all are easy care.

Our number one plant for a lengthy flowering season are roses. And in particular the repeat flowering roses.

Of these, the very popular ‘Iceberg’ is one that will flower almost year round except in cold climates. Or look for Rosa odorata ‘Mutablis’, and of course the ‘Carpet Roses’, these flower almost year round.

Our second group of plants are the Abutilons. These small shrubs will also flower almost year round. They cope with heat, are easily pruned and the variety of flower colours is great.

Fuchsias are next on the list, many will flower for 9 months of the year. Attractive flowers and they will also grow in light shade, containers and even hanging baskets. Look for Fuchsia magellanica.

Many Grevilleas will flower almost year round, ‘Robyn Gordon’ being one cultivar. Newer releases such as Grevillea’Amber Blaze’, Grevillea
‘Billy Bonkers’ and Grevillea’Canterbury Gold’ are three to consider. More long flowering Grevillea varieties are listed on our Grevillea page.

The old fashioned Wall Flowers (Erysimum) flowers from spring through to summer, and with little light pruning will repeat flower through to autumn. They love sun, grow well in poor soils and do not need much water. And yes they are evergreen.Best to take cuttings as they seem to only last 3 – 4 years.
