Worm Farms Brisbane and QLD
With Queenslands warm climate one of the major factors in setting up a worm farm is the location, and even as far south as Brisbane you will need to look for a cool shaded position. Best is full shade and with good air circulation when properly positioned a worm farm will do well even in a tropical climate.
One theory is that you can simply build your own worm farm, and while this is true for most hame gardeners a commercial plastic worm farm is the easist option. They are set up with removable trays as well as having a drip tray to collect the liquid waste.
If you choose the right position and ensure that the drainage of the liquid waste is carried out regularly you will have very few problems.
- Look for a system with 3 layers and a liquid collection tray at the bottom. Make sure that the lid is protected from rain as this can flood the worm farm.
- A good drainage system from the collection tray is essential, and the tap in this will be left on at most times to allow the moisture to drain away. We place a small watering can beneath the tap and use this as a collection system.
- As Brisbane and QLD has a warm climate you will need to locate your worm farm out of direct sun.
- Protection from heavy rain is essential as worm farms can flood
