Timor Black Bamboo
Bambusa lako is a very dark brown to black bamboo, in a tropical climate it can reach great heights, 15m plus, however in cooler areas it is a bamboo that will grow to about 12m and often taller in good conditions.
Used as a landscaping feature plant as well as a screening plant, the glossy black culms make this one of the more impressive and sought after bamboo varieties.
You will often find this striking bamboo as a feature in shopping centres and other commercial buildings. It thrives in the warmth of the indoors, and adds wonderful height between levels. The low care nature is also a great advantage in these situations.
One of the most popular of all of the bamboos for its great colour. Timor Black is widely available in Queensland and New South Wales.
Growing Conditions
Bambusa lako or ‘Timor Black Bamboo’ prefers a warm sheltered position, it grows well as far south as Sydney, and in the right position will grow in Melbourne, although other varieties may be a better choice.
The culms are very glossy and a deep purple to chocalate brown in colour (almost black) and at around 9cm in diameter are impressive on a mature plant. It does require a frost free position
