Standard Trees Plant Profile and Growing Hints
Standard trees are simply those that have been grown and pruned to have a single clear and clean upright trunk. They include some ‘weeping’ and ‘ball on a stick’ types however are not limited to this.
Although grafted standards are often thought of as being of a certain height a more accurate method of measurement is by the girth of the trunk as not all are indeed grafted.
So by standardising a tree we are simply growing it with a clean straight trunk. These trees are sought after for a number of landscaping situations including street plantings, planting in rows and where the uniformity of clean straight trunks is a part of overall landscape design.
Trees may be grafted onto a standard of a certain height and this is where weeping trees come into the picture.
A weeping Cherry for example could be grafted onto a 1.5m or 2.5m standard, the height of the straight clear trunk.
Some standard trees have small crowns, or can be easily pruned each year, without low branches these are ideal types for small gardens. Easy to plant beneath and not taking up a huge footprint.
