An interesting hybrid, Crassula ‘Moonglow’ is a cross between Craccula deceptor and Crasula perfoliata var. minor, from Cactus Land ( Johnson Cactus Gardens) in California in 1956
To top this off a variegated form is also available so let’s take a look at how to grow this sought after succulent.
Moonglow itself has pale green leaves with farina coating that gives it a silver shimmering look. The variated variety has all of this along with almost luminous pale patches of lighter green to buttery yellow.
Like most Crassula, foliage colour is determined by how much sun the plant receives, with the right amount of light a very pale pink blush will appear.
Like C. deceptor, this is a small growing upright plant, it will flower although the flowers themselves are insignificant compared to the foliage.
Tightly stacked chunky leaves make this an interesting specimen plant.
Flowers are typical pink and appear in winter, dormancy is in summer.
How To Grow Crassula ‘Moonglow’
- Light and Sun
Best in bright light, indirect afternoon light especially in hot summer periods will prevent leaf f burn.
To little light will lead to stretching of the leaves which detracts from the look of the plant. - Temperature and Humidity
Low humidity is essential, high humidity can cause fungal problems.
Protection from frost is also essential.
Try for a temperature range between 15 and 25C daytime, with a nighttime drop to around 10C - Soil and Pots
You need to choose a pot with good sized drainage holes, and then a free draining cactus and succulent potting mix.
Do not overpot, a pot size that is small contains the roots, less excess potting mix means the soil will dry more quickly.
Over time Crassula ‘Moonglow’’ will put out offsets and reach a height of around 30m (12 inches - Watering
We use a wet/dry cycle of watering, water well and then allow the soil to dry before watering again.
When we repot succulents we do not water for the first 14 days, this helps prevent any root problems.
