Recently renamed from Trillium rivale to Pseudotrillium rivale, this diminutive little woodland plant is an attractive addition to the garden and very easy care compared to its larger relatives.

Its from Oregon in the Siskiyou mountains, spreading into northern California, and it is the only species in the Pseudotrillium genus.

Flower colour will vary a little from pinks flecked with a soft red to white with similar flecks. It is low growing reaching only around 5 inches in height (12cm). Over time it will spread as the small bulbs or tubers multiply and divide.

In good conditions it will also self seed and form a very attractive carpet of flowers.

How to Grow Pseudotrillium rivale – Basic Care

If you prepare the soil well before planting you will have little trouble growing this wonderful little plant.

  • Choose a position with good morning sun and dappled shade in the afternoon. Near the dripline of deciduous trees is a great place.
  • Weed the area well, dig over the soil and add some extra compost and leaf mold is you have it.
  • Plant at around 2 inches (5cm) deep.
  • Water in well with a liquid fertiliser.
  • Keep the soil moist but not wet and soggy.
  • When the plant goes into dormancy in winter apply a thin layer of mulch.
  • Fertilise in spring woith a slow release type fertiliser.

You can also grow Pseudotrillium rivale in pots. Use a good quality potting mix and make sure the soil does not dry out.
