Commonly called ‘Saffron Crocus’ the botanical name is Crocus Sativus, and bulbs are readily available for sale online from specialist nurseries. Growing saffron in the home garden is not difficult given a sunny position and a well drained soil.

These are an autumn flowering bulb and can be used for gathering the stigmas to make saffron, or simply grown as ornamental bulbs.

Care

Crocus Sativus is prefers a sunny position in a well drained loose soil, keep damp during the flowering season. The best time to plant bulbs is in spring, although they can be planted earlier.

The saffron threads come from the stamens of the flower and are used as a spice in eastern dishes such as saffron chicken, the saffron threads should be harvested (with a pair of tweasers) as soon as the flower opens.
