Chionodoxa Luciliae

Chionodoxa Luciliae are from a group of low growing bulbs that flower in late winter to early spring. Commonly called ‘Glory of the Snow’ as in the natural habitat they would appear through the snow. In our climate it among the first of the spring bulbs to flower.

The deep green foliage and the contrasting deep blue flowers with white centres are held close to the ground, excellent both in the garden or grown in a container.

Species and cultivars include

  • Chionodoxa luciliae alba with large clusters of pure white flowers is known as ‘Glory of the Snow’
  • Chionodoxa luciliae
  • Chionodoxa luciliae ‘Pink Giant’, as the name suggests a variety with pink tinged flowers
These are the three most popular of these bulbs.
  • Chionodoxa sardensis with its clean blue flowers with a white centre is a rare but outstanding form
  • Chionodoxa tmoli has largish mauve to blue flowers fading to white towards the centre we think this is the same species as Chionodoxa forbesii or ‘Forbes’ Glory of the Snow.

Care

Chionodoxa need a cool protected position, moist humus rich soil. They bloom after Galanthus and will spread to form a dense clump in the right conditions.

Try planting beneath deciduous trees where they seem to thrive. They also look great planted in the rock garden.
