One of the taller growing species, Allium aflatunense with large globe like flowers in spring is sometimes referred to as the giant allium. Flower co lour varies from lilac through to purple and indeed ‘Purple Sensation’ is one of the darker flowering cultivars offered for sale in Australia. Reaching nearly 1m in height these are a wonderful addition to any dry garden. You may also see A. hollandicum ‘purple sensation’ in some catalogues, we think this is the same plant.
Allium aflatunense Care
Like nearly all alliums a well drained soil and a sunny position is essential. Best planted in a position where they can be allowed to multiply and form a good clump, minimal care is required once established. Plant at around 10 cm deep. Although they do cope with poor soils we do like to dig in a little well rotted compost before planting. In wet areas raise the garden bed a little by mounding up to improve drainage.
Propagation
Easiest is by division of clumps when dormant. Also by seed.
