Heated propagation is a way of improving both seed germination rates and the strike rate of plant cuttings.

With seeds, it also allows you to plant vegetables earlier, therefore improving harvest for many varieties.

In colder climates, or if you are trying to grow tropical or sub tropical plants, then a heated greenhouse is the ultimate solution.

types of heated propagation equipment are available to the home gardener.

For Seeds

Ground or soil temperature is important for seed germination and growth. In general a minimum ground temperature of 6 C suits many vegetable seeds, while some require a minimum of 10 C.

Vegetables from warmer climates, such as tomatoes, aubergines (eggplants) and chillies are a few that require warmth. They also have a long growing season, so improve the crop, and start it early, a heated propagation tray in the answer.

For Plant Cuttings

With plant cuttings the system is a little different with many cuttings requiring bottom heat (heat from below) to encourage good root growth. And this is where heated propagation mats and trays come into their own.

Heated Propagation Equipment

Three basic types are available for the home gardener.

  1. A heated propagator with a custom dome or cover that improves humidity and air temperature as well as soil temperature. These come with and without thermostats.
  2. Propagation mats, and these are just that, a mat with heating wires in it. Usually without a thermostat, however you can attache one if you need to.
  3. What you could call cloches, cold frames or propagation boxes. These are not heated as such, they are covered growing systems that use the heat of the sun to warm the plants and soil. The covered tops help retain humidity. These are cheap, and excellent for beginners.

DIY propagators.

Home made propagators can also be used. It may be as simple as sitting your seedling tray on top of a water heater. Putting a cloche over the seed tray, or simply placing the seedling trays in a warm sunny position.
