Much sought after by gardeners for the taste as well as other qualities heirloom vegetable seeds are non hybrid seeds that have been developed and grown for many years. So the lost flavors of the past can be regained by growing many of these older varieties.
So what are they ? These are varieties that have been for many years by gardeners, in Australia we owe a lot to the Italian community for the ongoing cultivation of older varieties, often from within a family.
Available for sale online from a number of seed suppliers, they provide access to a large catalogue of vegetable seeds that often have superior taste to hybrid varieties.
So until recently heirloom seeds were the province of ‘those in the know’, today many seed catalogues are available online. You can have access to the widest selection of Non GMO and open pollinated seeds from around the world, all for your own garden.
We tend to look for the smaller, independent suppliers, it is interesting to know that some large food companies are in control of some seed suppliers, not sure that we want to go with that.
Heirloom tomato seeds and eggplant seeds are particularly popular for taste alone.
