The orchis world is diverse and Australian Cymbidium Orchid species are not well know, however Australia does have its own cymbidium species.
The tree identified species are all epiphytic, mainly growing in nooks and crannies on eucalyptus species in Queensland.
Australian Cymbidium Orchid Species – List and notes
- Not widely grown, Cymbidium canaliculatum is one, it is known Banana Orchid, probably because its yellow flower colour, is an epiphytic species from Queensland. It does require a warm subtropical climate to thrive.
- C. madidum is from the warmer coastal forest regions of New South Wales and extends through Queensland. It is an epiphytic type that rather than attaching itself to tree trunks tends to grow in the forks of trees, it is a shade lover and has wonderful yellow flowers.
- C.suave is a little more spectacular flower wise, growing over a wide area from southern New South Wales to Southern Queensland. It grows naturally on dead or decaying wood in a moist temperate climate, this rainforest gullies in the coastal ranges. So an old hollow log will do the job.
Can you grow these orchids at home.
Both C. madidum and C. canaliculatum are really tropical orchids which would require some winter heat in areas below Sydney, so the cooler grown C. suave is a little easier in some respects, however still difficult.
Most are grown in greenhouses and are usually grown as mounted species, or in a very free draining potting mix in hanging baskets. They all require moist humid conditions in summer and a relatively dry, however not cold, winter.
