Themeda : Plant Profile and Landscaping Uses
Themeda australis which is commonly called ‘Kangaroo Grass’ is an attractive perennial native grass. Wholesalers offer this for land reclamation projects as well as for use as a tough landscaping grass for dry areas. Tuft forming and flowering in mid summer, also commonly known as Mingo grass.
Available in a number of forms including a low growing, dwarf or prostrate form.
- The species Themeda australis syn T. triandra will reach around 1.5m and is found in all Australian states.
- Reaching around 20cm The cultivar T. australis ‘mingo’ makes an excellent ground cover plant for low traffic areas. The blue weeping foliage will flower in summer months with deep brown – red seed heads. Themeda works well as a landscape feature in rockeries or as a border.
Care and Pruning
Themeda australis can be grown from seed or propagated by division, if you are buying potted plants try to make sure that they are not potbound as such plants seem to be a little difficult to establish.
Care and maintenance revolves around removing old foliage once a year, smaller clumps can be cleaned up by hand, larger areas can be raked.
Themeda can be cut back heavily in late winter / early spring to freshen it up and promote new growth. Themeda is fairly drought tolerant once established
