Mop Top Robinia – Plant Profile and Landscaping Uses

Used widely as a street tree Robinia pseudoacacia or the Mop Top Robinia is a deciduous tree with attractive green foliage is fast growing and withstands poor soils and poor air quality. Will grow to approx 5m, often used under power lines. Tolerant of poor soil and reasonably drought tolerant. Root system is vigorous.

Nearly all Mop Tops sold are grafted, and many will reach between 2-5m depending on the graft, however un grafted species are capable of reaching up to 15m.

These are the classic ‘ball on a stick’ tree, a rounded top on a straight trunk. Excellent in positions where the root systems will not be disturbed. In positions where the root systems are disturbed they tend to sucker.

A number of varieties are available including 

Care

Once established they require little care other than pruning on occasions to maintain the nice dense head. Full sun is best. Stake young trees until the trunk becomes strong and thick. Regarded as drought tolerant once established.

Prune every 2-3 years to maintain shape, often used in formal gardens and in commercial landscaping.
