Juniperus chinensis ‘Spartan’
An attractive upright conifer, Junipers chinensis ‘Spartan’ is a low maintenance plant that makes an excellent screen for narrow spaces.
Used widely as a hedging plant as well as for topiary. the Spartan Conifer has good thick dark green foliage, it can be left unpruned and will reach 6m over time. It can also be pruned to a formal hedge.
It is a plant that requires a well drained soil, once established it is regarded as reasonably drought tolerant.
Grows well in full sun to part shade, not really suited for dense shade. Grows well in a range of soils and conditions including coastal conditions.

Care
Prepare soil well by digging in well rotted compost before planting. Water in well with a liquid seaweed fertiliser. Keep moist trough the first summers until a good root system is established.
In windy areas stake when young to ensure upright growth.

With fine foliage this is a tree that prunes well, it is also an excellent topiary plant, the tight small foliage makes it a great candidate for spiral columns. If you need to prune do not cut back hard, cutting into old wood can leave spaces in the growth.
Soil and Water requirements
Tolerates a range of soil conditions including dry and compacted, Does require good drainage so no waterlogged soils.
