Wholesale Gordonia Nurseries

Gordonia axillaris is the most widely grown of the species and is an attractive small tree to large shrub.  Grown for both the attractive foliage and the large white flowers with prominent yellow stamens. The name axillaris refers to the flowers growing from the leaf axils, the upper part where the leaf joins the stem.

New growth has good red stems which add to the overall appeal of the plant. Over time Gordonia will reach to 5m in height and in a open position form a good rounded grown.

Growing well in filtered sun to part shade they make an excellent evergreen landscaping tree. Plant with Rhododendrons, Camellias and similar plants.

Growth rate is regarded as slow to medium, once established Gordonia can be tip pruned to keep in shape.

Best protected from heavy frosts Gordonia axillaris is best grown in a position where it is protected from the hot afternoon sun.

Gordonia Varieties Include.

  • Gordonia yunnanense – Very good glossy foliage, emerging red and turning to a mid green. Large white flowers in spring. Can be pruned to a hedge or screen.
  • Gordonia hainanense – Large shrub to small tree with a slight pendulous look. White flowers with yellow stamens.
