WHOLESALE Caryota mitis (Clustering Fishtail Palm) NURSERIES
Grown for the attractive foliage Caryota mitis is commonly called the clustering fishtail palm. The foliage differs from most palm trees and this is its appeal. As it matures it clumps and forms multiple trunks. It is not a self cleaning palm so old dead foliage will need to be removed.
Although it is by nature a tropical palm, it is also an under story plant so needs shade, particularly afternoon shade from the hot sun.
It will seed and these form in large drooping clumps. The flower form as large purple inflorescences and do look attractive, however some gardeners remove them early on to prevent litter from seeds.
Care and Pruning
Preferring a shady position, or protection from afternoon sun Caryota mitis require good soil and regular moisture during long dry spells. It is a tropical plant, however will withstand very light frosts.
