Araucaria heterophylla or Norfolk Island Pine is a tall growing tree to 40m. Very symetrical and open branch structure and widely used in seaside locations. This attractive growth habit along with hardy and disease free natures make it a very popular landscaping tree.
Can reach 70m in height and is a long lived tree. Growth rate is fast, however this will depend on both climate and soil conditions.
Soil and Climate
Tolerant of poor sandy soils, however good drainage is required. The Norfolk Island Pine will cope with periodic periods of very wet soils, however not prolonged innundation.
Grows well as far south as Melbourne and the Surf Coast. Excellent choice for exposed windy positions.
Best planted away from roads and solid paths as the root system can lift surfaces in time.
