Angophora, Plant Profile and Landscaping Uses
Angphora are a group of small to medium growing trees well suited to a range of landscaping uses. Grown as feature trees where on maturity they are stately and provide shade as well, Angophora flower in spring to summer with masses of creamy white flowers that attract bees and birds to the garden.
Another feature is the rust coloured peeling bark that look attractive on mature specimens. They are widely used in parks, larger gardens and also as street trees.
They are related to the Eucalypts and Corymbia and grow in very similar conditions. Drought tolerant and low maintenance once established.
A number of species are in the genus ranging from smaller species to taller varieties such as :
- A.hispida that will reach around 7 – 10m
- A. floribunda ( 15 – 20m)
- A. Costata which can get to over 25m.
Species are generally easy to prune and tolerate all soil types except for heavy water logged soils. Excellent in poor sandy soils. They do however suffer from heavy frosts.
Generally available from wholesale growers in sizes from 30cm pots to larger tree to nearly 4m in height in advanced root control bags or pots.
