Alnus Plant Profile and Growing Hints
Commonly called Alders, number of Alnus species are grown in Australia, the evergreen Alder is widely used in suburban planting throughout temperate Australia. Fast growing and with attractive weeping foliage it has been likened to an evergreen silver birch.
Other species are deciduous and some have vigorous root systems.
Although some can become a large tree over time, the evergreen Alder does have the advantage of being easily pruned to shape.
- Alnus jorullensis or evergreen ‘Alder’ is a widely used species, fast growing and yet easily pruned. Reaching around 10m in height with a spread of 4 – 5 m this is a semi deciduous tree. It loses foliage in cool climates, the colder, the more foliage it will lose.

- Alnus cordata is the Italian Alder, this species is deciduous and makes a good tree for larger parks and gardens. Reaching around 10m in height pyramidical in habit with a spread of 6 – 7 m it does have a vigorous root system.
- Alnus glutinosa is the Black Alder, deciduous, however it does hold its foliage until late. Reaches around 12m in height with a spread of 6 – 7 m, broader over time. The bark is very dark in color giving the tree its common name. Alnus glutinosa ‘Imperialis’ is the Cut Leaf Alder. Alnus glutinosa ‘Razzamitaz’ is the variegated Alder.
