Viburnum opulus ‘Notcutt’s Variety’ is characterised by large lace cap type flowers in spring which are followed clusters of glossy red berries which last from summer right into winter.
Large gloss green leaves, deeply lobed, and with the added attraction of good autumn colour as they turn to shades of coppery red. This is just one of many Viburnum varieties that are worth a place in the garden.
This is a frost tolerant plant, hardy and easy to grow. The name comes from Notcutt’s Nursery stated by Roger Crompton Notcutt in 1897.
- This is a variety that appreciates moisture through summer so water deeply during dry periods every 1 – 2 weeks if required.
- Mulch around the plant tp maintain a cool moist root run.
- Fertilise with a general purpose organic fertiliser in spring.
- As this is a plant that can grow to 3 metres tall, give it some space. A position at the rear of the border can be suitable, however it can also be used near the front of the garden border and allowed to spill over a lawn or grassed area.
Remove older stems every 3 – 4 years to promote healthy new growth.
Notcutt’s is a faster growing plant than the species, larger flowers and regarded as having better autumn colour.
