Osmanthus heterophyllus ‘Goshiki’ is an outstanding evergreen for year round colour. ‘Goshiki’ meaning “five-colored” in Japanese is a compact evergreen shrub admired for its richly variegated foliage.

New growth emerges in bronze or pinkish tones before maturing into a mosaic of green, cream, gold, and pale yellow.

This vibrant display provides texture and brightness in every season, even during winter when many other shrubs fade.

How To Grow Osmanthus heterophyllus ‘Goshiki’

Ideal growing conditions

Plant Osmanthus heterophyllus ‘Goshiki’ in well-drained, fertile soil. It thrives in full sun to part shade, though in hot or dry climates, a little afternoon shade helps protect its foliage. Once established, ‘Goshiki’ is resilient—tolerating clay soils and short dry spells with ease.

Planting tips:

  • Choose a position sheltered from cold, drying winds.
  • Add compost or organic matter when planting to improve soil structure.
  • Mulch around the base annually to retain moisture and suppress weeds.

Size and shape

‘Goshiki’ forms a dense, naturally rounded shrub, typically reaching 1.5–3 m tall and wide (about 5–10 ft tall by 4–8 ft wide). Its compact, mounding habit makes it perfect for hedging, screening, or as a colorful focal point in borders. With light pruning, it can easily be maintained at a smaller size to suit your garden layout.

Maintenance and pruning

This is a low-maintenance evergreen once established. Water regularly during the first growing season to help the roots develop, then reduce watering as the plant matures. ‘Goshiki’ becomes moderately drought-tolerant and rarely troubled by pests or diseases.

Pruning guide:

  • Lightly trim new growth in spring to encourage bushiness.
  • Clip hedges after flowering to retain a tidy shape.
  • Remove any frost-damaged or wayward branches as needed.

Flowers and seasonal interest

In late summer to autumn, small, tubular white flowers may appear, often followed by dark fruits. While not especially showy, the blooms offer subtle fragrance and attract pollinators. Most gardeners, however, grow ‘Goshiki’ for its outstanding foliage rather than its flowers.

Use it as:

  • An accent shrub in mixed borders.
  • A colorful evergreen hedge or screen.
  • A foundation planting near entrances or patios.
  • A container plant to brighten shaded corners.

Why Grow Osmanthus heterophyllus ‘Goshiki’

The appeal of ‘Goshiki’ lies in its year-round interest and adaptability. Few shrubs combine vivid, multi-toned foliage with evergreen structure and low-maintenance care. Whether planted as a statement feature or a reliable backdrop, it adds texture, color, and longevity to any landscape design.
