These are the Southern Beeches and Nothofagus species are found in both Australia and Chile as well as New Zealand and New Guinea. Medium to large growing evergreen trees many species make great feature trees in cooler climates.
Nothofagus Species
- Nothofagus cunninghamii or ‘Myrtle Beech’, this is an evegreen tree, perhaps the best known species a tall growing tree to 30m + and found in Victoria and Tasmania.
- Nothofagus moorei or ‘Southern Beech’ from New South wales and Queensland is found growing to 40m + in its natural environment including Barrington Tops National Park and Will Willi National Park.
- The smaller growing Nothofagus gunnii from Tasmania is deciduous and this one really is small reaching around 2-m and is also known as the Tanglefoot Beech. For those who have bushwalked in Tasmania in Autumn you may well have seen the Autumn colour in areas such as Crater Lake.
Other Nothofagus Species
- N.antarctica is the Southern Beech.
- N. obliqua, and N. dombeyi are from Chile.
- N. menziesii which is from New Zealand is another species to consider.
