Silk Tassel Tree
A stunning winter flowering tree from California, Garrya elliptica is commonly called the ‘Silk Tassel Tree’.
This is a small to medium sized evergreen tree that brings colour and texture to the winter garden when it comes into flower. The growth habit is spreading and dense, it will reach around 3 metres in height, dark green leathery foliage and a slight weeping habit.
It is the flowers are are the star of the show with this tree, long silvery white catkins cover the tree for weeks in winter crating a silky curtain.
Garrya elliptica Varieties
Three forms are available
- Garrya elliptica: Tall growing to 4 metres plus.
- Evie: A smaller growing form to around 3 metres is also suited tom growing as an espalier..
- James Roof : A select form with longer Tassels.
Care
Once established this is a low maintenance easy care tree or shrub.
- Best planted in an open sunny position and a well drained soil. Once established it is regarded as relatively drought tolerant and long lived.
- Pruning is generally not required other than the removal of old dead wood.
- In a good humus rich soil, little to no extra fertiliser will be required.
- Mulch around the plant to maintain a cool moist root run.
Use as a specimen plant in the garden border or lawn, grow smaller varieties in a large pot or container, use the flowers as cut flowers for a display with impact.
