Hills weeping Fig is Ficus microcarpa var. hillii. used widely in topiary especially in street situations where they are often pruned to form a ball or pom pom. Grown both as a specimen tree as well as hedging or screening plant, it is the attractive foliage that makes this such a useful landscaping plant.
Excellent mid green foliage and a fast growth habit are features, grown as a tree the trunk shows a nice speckled colour.
Ficus microcarpa will reach 10 – 15 m, however they are often pruned to a much smaller size. Shade tolerant, drought tolerant and able to cope with poor soil conditions Ficus microcarpa is a versatile landscaping tree for a variety of situations.
Ficus microcarpa is also known as the Chinese Banyan or Malayan Banyana fast growing evergreen shade trees suitable for parks and gardens.
Ficus microcarpa requires a humus rich moist soil to grow well, full sun to part shade is best. The root system is regarded as invasive, very fibrous and is best planted away from sewerage lines and foundations of buildings etc.
Easily pruned to keep in shape.
Ficus ‘Flash’ is a favoured variety for hedging, good dense foliage and a tree that grows well in a range of conditions.
