Bystropogon canariensis or ‘Canary Island Smoke Bush’
Tough, drought tolerant and with interesting silvery grey foliage Bystropogon canariensis or ‘Canary Island Smoke Bush’ is a scented evergreen shrub. It is the flowers that appear in summer that give it the common name of ‘Canary Island Smoke Bush’. They rise above the foliage in light grey plumes, creating a smokey effect. A real feature in the garden at this time of the year.
Like most Bystropogon species the foliage is scented foliage with a minty fragrance, its one of those plants that when you brush or crush the foliage the fragrance is released. An interesting plant next to narrow path that can add to the sensory impact of the garden.
Care and Growing Notes
Bystropogon canariensis or Canary Island Smoke Bush is drought tolerant and growing to 2m this grey foliaged plant does well at the back of the border. Try a sunny position and a well drained soil.
Pruning is easy and recommended, we would suggest hard pruning each winter. This promotes good new growth, and maintains a compact plant. It will bounce back to 2m again by summer.
