From the Himalayas, Buddleia colvilei is a frost tolerant ‘almost’ evergreen shrub with wonderful deep pink flowers in late spring through summer. The almost evergreen part depends on the climate and the severity of the winter. This neat Buddleia has large panicles of flowers which will cause the stems to arch over.
Beautiful soft mid to deep pink flowers that hang gracefully, make this one of the prettiest, yet not the most widely grown Buddleia. Deep green foliage has a rust colour on the underside which adds to the overall appearance.
Care and Pruning
Sometimes known as ‘The Himalayan Butterfly Bush’, Buddleia colvilei will reach around 3 -5 m and is a fairly ‘neat’ growing plant.
Buddleja colvilei ‘Kewensis’ is perhaps the best known cultivar, however Buddleia colvillei pendula is a form with a more ‘weeping habit’. A humus rich moist soil is best, try to avoid the hot afternoon sun for longer flower life. Good drainage is essential and a cool root run will enhance growth.
Pruning is only to keep in shape and remove any dead or diseased wood. An excellent alternative for the rear of the garden border.
