Angophora are a group of small to medium growing trees well suited to a range of landscaping uses. Grown as feature trees where on maturity they are stately and provide shade as well, Angophora flower in spring to summer with masses of creamy white flowers that attract bees and birds to the garden.
Another feature is the rust coloured peeling bark that look attractive on mature specimens. They are widely used in parks, larger gardens and also as street trees.
They are related to the Eucalypts and Corymbia and grow in very similar conditions. Drought tolerant and low maintenance once established.
Angophora Varieties
A number of species are in the genus ranging from smaller species to taller varieties such as :
- A. hispida will reach around 7 – 10m. Commonly called the dwarf Angophera, and it is perhaps the smallest growing of this group of useful native plants.
Reaching around 6-8m in height, common name is the ‘scrub apple’ and ‘dwarf apple’. Growing naturally as a small tree or shrub, in cultivation they are grown to form a single trunk.
Originally from the Sydney area this is a versatile native tree, widely used in street plantings. Masses of creamy white flowers cover the tree in summer.
More widely sold as advanced specimens pruned and trained to an upright habit. - A. floribunda ( 15 – 20m) This one is the rough barked apple, masses of creamy flowers fron spring through summer and with a rough stringy bark. A interesting specimen tree in larger gardens and parks.
- Angophora costata or ‘Smooth-Barked Apple’ which can get to over 25m. Not an apple tree at all but a large evergreen tree with dense foliage with a broad domed crown. Very attractive smooth and heavily patterned new pink bark is an attraction.
With common names including ‘Sydney Red Gum’ and ‘Apple Myrtle’ . Angophora costata is found widely in Southern Queensland and coastal NSW. A versatile evergreen tree Angophora costata will usually reach around 10m in cultivation. Available in a number of sizes from listed wholesale growers.
Creamy flowers in summer and attractive bark are added attractions to this versatile tree. Pictured right the specimen is around 100 years old.
Species are generally easy to prune and tolerate all soil types except for heavy water logged soils. Excellent in poor sandy soils. They do however suffer from heavy frosts.
Generally available from in sizes from 30cm pots to larger tree to nearly 4m in height in advanced root control bags or pots.
