Ornamental Pear Trees

Pyrus calleryana - Ornamental Pear Tree
Pyrus calleryana – Ornamental Pear Tree

Ornamental Pear Trees are species and varieties from the Pyrus genus. They are flowering rather than fruiting pear trees grown for the ornamental value of the foliage and flowers as well as for shade trees. These are deciduous tree originally from China and surrounding countries.  It is the many cultivars that are widely used in landscaping that see offered by wholesale growers.

Although they are grown for the green foliage and autumn colour, it is the flowers in spring that make them a standout tree in many landscaping applications. Like all flowering trees, ornamental pears will fruit, however the fruit, when it does appear is small and inedible.

Landscaping Uses

Pyrus Calleryana are one of the most popular species however other ornamental Pear varieties (pyrus ussuriensis and salicifolia) are also favourite trees for street trees, landscaping and for use as feature trees in the home garden. Able to withstand periodic dry conditions Ornamental Pears are popular for the autumn color and beautiful spring blossom.

With forms ranging from upright or ‘fastigate’ to others with broad spreading canopies these are a versatile and useful group of landscaping trees.

Ornamental Pear Varieties

  • Pyrus calleryana ‘Aristocrat’ will reach 12 -14m and has a 8m crown.
  • Pyrus calleryana ‘Chanticleer’ has slightly smaller crown and is regarded as more structurally sound tree, more resistant to wind damage.
  • Pyrus calleryana ‘Capital’ has a more narrow or upright growth habit with a 4m spread.
  • Pyrus calleryana ‘Cleevland Select’ is a medium sized tree grown widely, used in shopping centres such as Chadstone in Melbourne as a boundary tree.
  • Red Spire
  • Southward dancer

Use varieties such as Pyrus calleryana ‘Capital’ with its narrow or upright growth habit as a screening tree. The weeping variety Pyrus salicifolia is very attractive and worth a place in the garden. Growing conditions and care for Pyrus (ornamental Pears) While reasonably hardy once established Pyrus prefer some moisture, mulching surrounding areas to provide a cool root run or some irrigation during dry periods will assist with maintaing healthy growth
