Senecio mandraliscae, nicknamed Blue Chalksticks, is a standout succulent that’s as hardy as it is handsome and from South Africa’s sun-drenched landscapes. Let’s guide you through everything about this easy-care beauty.
Description and Origins
This spreading succulent—also known under synonyms like Curio talinoides var. mandraliscae—sports elongated, pencil‑shaped, blue‑grey leaves coated in a fine waxy farina that gives it that chalky bloom. Native to South Africa, and common in the Eastern Cape region. It easily forms a dense mat about 30–60 cm across and up to around 30 cm tall.
Difference: Senecio mandraliscae vs Senecio repens
It is a little difficult to see the difference, and often these two species are confused. However here is our interpretaion of the difference in our growing conditions.
- Senecio mandraliscae (Blue Chalksticks): Taller, vigorous, narrow and elongated pointed leaves, forming a striking architectural form More of a Blue Grey colour which tends to enphasise a blue colour a little more.
- Senecio repens (Curio repens): Lower-growing, mat-forming groundcover with shorter, broader, boat‑shaped leaves; more compact and delicate. A Blue green colour
GROWING CONDITIONS and Basic Care
- Natural Habitat
Rocky, sun-exposed terrains of South Afric - Soil/Potting Mix
Fast-draining cactus or succulent mix, ideally with coarse sand/perlite/grit. - Sun/Light
Tolerant of part shade to full sun, Full sun yields best colors; tolerates light shade however growth can be sparse and colours not as intense. - Temperature
Prefers warm; not frost-hardy—below ~5 °C (41 °F) can cause damage - Climate Zones
USA Zones 10–12; UK in mild sheltered spots; Australia in Mediterranean-style regions like parts of Victoria - Fertiliser
Balanced, diluted liquid fertilizer in spring/summer—once a month or 3–4 times total in growing period
PRUNING
Tidy or shape in late winter/early spring to control form and encourage fuller habit.
PROPAGATION
- Stem cuttings: The Easiest method, take cuttings 4 – 6 inches long, allow to callus for a few days, then plant in dry, well‑draining substrate
- Leaf propagation: Selecect va leaf with some stem, insert into slightly moist soil; new growth emerges in weeks
