Unusual in that no one is sure where it comes from, Lithops steineckeana is also a little different in appearance from most species.
It gets its name from the Steinecke Nursery, near Stuttgart, Germany where it was grown from seed and turned out to be an oddity.
Thought to be an intergeneric hybrid, perhaps with one of the Conophytums it has been assigned C388.
A distinctive rounded body and a lack of the clear windows of some other species make this an interesting Lithops.
One issue is, that most likely being a hybrid itself, when grown from seed it gives us a variety of differing forms, so Lithops steineckeana is perhaps more than any other a variable Lithop.
