Trollius

  • Facebook
  • Pinterest

Related to Ranuculus, Trollius require very similar growing conditions. These are a woodland plant grown for the golden yellow flowers and the attractive ferny foliage. Flowers are held upright above the foliage and look like ‘Golden Balls’ when they first appear.

Trollius ‘Golden Queen’, is also know as the ‘Globe Flower’ and is perhaps the easiest to find in Australia.

A number of cultivars are available including Trollius ‘Orange Globe’ with a deeper yellow than most tending towards orange. Larger flowers to around 7cm.

One of the prettiest cultivars is T. europeus ‘New Moon’ with clear Lemon / Yellow flowers, available from Frogmore Gardens.

How to grow Trollius – General Care

All Trollius species thrive in humus-rich, consistently moist soil and prefer a semi-shaded position. Adequate moisture throughout the growing season is essential for healthy growth and flowering.

They perform best with full morning sun, combined with some protection from the heat of the afternoon sun. During dry periods, plants may naturally die back into dormancy; this is a survival response rather than a problem. Once moisture levels improve, growth will resume.

Trollius (Globe Flower) – Growing & Care Guide

LIGHT

Trollius grows best in full morning sun to light shade. Some protection from strong afternoon sun is important, especially in warmer climates, as excessive heat can stress plants and shorten their flowering period.

SOIL

A humus-rich, fertile soil is essential. Trollius prefers moisture-retentive but well-drained soil and performs particularly well in soils enriched with compost or well-rotted organic matter.

WATERING

Consistent moisture throughout the growing season is critical. Plants should never be allowed to dry out completely. In extended dry periods, Trollius may die back into dormancy as a protective response, re-emerging once adequate moisture returns.

FERTILIZER

Feed in early spring with a balanced organic fertilizer or apply a generous layer of compost to support strong growth and flowering. Additional feeding is rarely required if soil fertility is maintained.

PRUNING

Remove spent flower stems to maintain a tidy appearance and encourage continued vigor. Once foliage declines later in the season, plants can be cut back to ground level.

GENERAL CARE

Trollius is a long-lived perennial when grown in the right conditions. Mulching helps retain soil moisture and keeps roots cool. Avoid dry, exposed sites and monitor moisture levels closely during warm weather for best performance.

Species and varieties

  • T. chinensis – Orange semi-double flowers in early summer, palmate leaves and best in moist light shade.
  • T. europaeus – Rounded, globe-shaped pale yellow flowers in late spring, deeply divided foliage; thrives in consistently moist soil and partial shade, ideal for woodland gardens.
  • T. laxus – Open, buttercup-like creamy yellow to pale orange flowers in late spring.
  • T. ledebourii – Tall-growing species with large, rich orange flowers in early to mid-summer; robust and eye-catching, suited to moist fertile soil in sun or partial shade.
  • T. chinensis ‘Golden Queen’
  • T. ‘Lemon Queen’

Propagation

Propagate by division in early spring or autumn, taking care to retain good root systems, as plants dislike disturbance. Fresh seed can be sown as soon as ripe, but requires a period of cold stratification to germinate; sow in moist compost and leave outdoors over winter. Seed-grown plants may take several years to flower.

Where To Buy Trollius

As for where you will find them ? You probably need to look for seed for the rarer species, however online suppliers can provide many varieties..
