One of the popular forms of outdoor heating are fire pits. They are designed to allow a natural fire to be lit outdoors, on a patio or even a decked area. In this design the fire itself is contained in a metal pit and raised well above ground level.
In the original form the fire pit would actually be dug into the ground, however we have progressed a little, and although originally the hole was dug to hold the fire in place, collect coals for cooking and to be easily covered after, modern fire pits are a little different.
Excellent in areas where outdoor entertaining is a feature for the cooler months of the year, in Sydney smaller styles can even be found that will fit a smallish balcony. Many of these are powers by gas, and may need professional installation.
Fire Pit Styles
Today we have timber fires, gas and even electric, fired versions. Materials for the actual pit range from metal such as steel, stainless steel, cast iron and copper to brick which is a more permanent option.
So we are dealing with two factors, the first is heat and the second is aesthetics.
Metal fire pits are mainly made from spun steel, many use Corten steel which has a natural aged look. Look for steel that is at least 2 – 4mm thick for durability. Most are set on a stand to lift them above the ground level.
An innovative gas fire pit mounted on an outdoor bench is just one of the many alternatives to the traditional designs.
This style suits areas where space is limited, townhouses in Melbourne where outdoor areas are small, but mainly used for entertaining is one example.
With a clear wind protective enclosure designs such as this can be well suited to balconies and patio situations.
Fire Pit Installation and Accessories
If you are installing in any position, especially on a decked or patio area it is essential to consult with your local council to make sure you are meeting appropriate fire regulations.
Consider purchasing a lid, these work to cover the fire and put it out by depriving it of oxygen as well as to protect the pit from rain.
And of course we has the Scouts version, The Dakota Fire Pit, but that’s another story altogether.
