Privacy Trees and Screening Plants

Privacy trees or evergreen screening trees are in demand. We look at the best best fast growing privacy trees and some slower ones, along with a list of other screening plants for the home garden.

It needs to be remembered that final growing heights of privacy trees will be determined by a number of factors including climate and soil conditions. Refer to local nurseries for more information on growing heights, size etc.

Best Privacy Trees and Screening Plants for home gardens and landscaping

  • Cupressus Leightons Green and others.
    Cupressocyparis leylandii ‘Castlewellan Gold’ Popular conifer growing from 6 – 10 m
  • Photinia 
    Photinia robusta, Photinia Red Robin and Photinia Glabra Rubens will grow to 5m and more
  • Pittosporum James Sterling and other Pittosporums 
    will grow from 2 – 5m
  • Viburnum odoratissimum and tinus 
    Will grow from 2.5 – 3 m
  • Murraya paniculata 
    Slightly slower growing than some this will grow from 1 – 2 m
  • Luma apiculata 
    2 – 3.5m
  • Lily Pilly (Acmena, Waterhousia or Syzgium)
    Many cultivars available growing from 1m to 10m depending on cultivars.
  • Elaeocarpus eumundi
    The Eumundi Quandong is a small growing rainforest tree well suited as screen. 4-8m and regarded as having a non invasive root system. Full sun to part shade.
  • Magnolia
    Little Gem, Kay Parris and Teddy Bear are all evergreen magnolias suitable for privacy trees. These will grow from 5 – 10 m. Slower than others.
  • Michalea Doltopa
    Related to the Magnolias but faster growing, perhaps not a dense as magnolias.
  • Juniperus communis ‘Hibernica’
    Irish Juniper, evergreen, columnar habit growing to 5m.
  • Bamboo
    Bamboo makes a great screening plants, remember that some bamboos are clumping and other are running.
