Garlic drying in the garden shed

Garden sheds are a practical solution for storing garden tools as well as being a focal point in a garden if they are well designed.

Smaller structures can act as work areas for repotting plants and sowing seeds. Larger sheds are used for storage.

With so many types of garden shed for sale it is essential to understand garden shed design needs to considered.

A well designed shed is an important addition to any garden and ideas differ greatly as to what makes a good design.

Garden sheds provide not only secure storage for valuable equipment but also protection from the elements and a safe place to store chemicals, fertilizers and other gardening essentials. Or maybe for drying garlic (see picture right)

A good shed should be secure, dry and preferably in a shaded position so that it remains cool. Garden sheds may be purpose built, constructed from kits, purchased online of from specialist garden shed suppliers.

When designing a garden shed take into account the following ideas:

It is wise to make a list of what you want in a shed, your storage requirements, access, security and decide if it is purely for storage or do you need space for gardening activities. Will your shed be a feature in the garden, or will it be tucked away, in particular this will determine external design ideas and materials used.

Six aspects of garden shed design.

  1. Water proof
Garden sheds should provide protection to machinery such as mowers, line trimmers and chainsaws as well as garden tools, chemicals and fertilizers. Garden sheds need to be water proof, not only from rain but from ground water as well. Consider a concrete floor
  2. Security
Garden sheds need to provide secure storage, not only to prevent theft, but to stop children from gaining access to chemicals and other materials
  3. Storage System
Garden sheds need to provide proper storage including shelving. A Garden shed needs to be organised, good storage is essential.
  4. A cool position
Garden Sheds by their nature tend to get hot, they rarely have insulation. A shaded position will prevent the shed becoming to hot.
  5. A work bench
A work bench either inside or just outside is great for tool maintenance and for use as a potting bench
  6. Animal and vermin proof.
Sometimes difficult to prevent mice, however dogs, cats, birds and possums are a real problem, keep them out of garden sheds.
