Guide to Open Gardens – Melbourne and Victoria

With the new state based open garden scheme you will have access to some wonderful private gardens both in Melbourne and in Rural Victoria. However not all gardens are part of the ‘Open Gardens Scheme’ scheme and many are open to the public through the year.

In Melbourne and Rural Victoria a number of noteworthy gardens are open almost year round.

Cloudhill Gardens

The gardens at Cloudehill are worth a visit, and are open when the Cloudhill Nursery is open. Jeremy Francis developed this garden from an old wholesale nursery. Divided into a number of ‘garden rooms’ it has interest in every season.

Cruden Farm

This is the garden of the late Dame Elisabeth Murdoch who worked with the horticulturalist Michael Morrison to create a stunning garden in idyllic surrounds. The gardens are open on selected days each month and booking are essential on these days. Take a tour at 10am,or wander at your leisure.

Coombe Cottage – Dame Nellie Melba’s Cottage

These gardens are open to guided tours Monday to Saturday at 10 am and 2 pm bookings are essential. The gardens are also open on other selected days. See the web site for details.

Gardens of Tieve Tara

Only one hour north of Melbourne and over 7 acres of garden the property itself has been in existence sine 1854 in one form or another. The current owners have make many improvements.

Sunnymeade

Hidden away in the the Strathbogie Ranges, 2 hrs drive from Melbourne Based around ‘garden rooms’ the Persian Styles garden is a highlight.

The garden of the well known plantsman Stephen Ryan is open on special occasions or by appointment for groups. One of the very best woodland gardens in Australia. Also the home of Dicksonia Rare Plants
