Random Weave Basketry Workshop

Discover the ancient and contemplative craft of basket making with¬?professional basket maker Meri Peach whose work has featured¬?in major craft exhibitions (see¬?www.sharkchic.com.au). In this workshop you¬?will learn how to use plants to construct beautiful baskets with¬?unique shapes, textures, colours and scents. You will make a basket¬?incorporating the techniques of random weave and cord making. Included in the workshop will be discussion around the history and¬?culture of basket making, explanation of gathering and preparation of¬?materials, and demonstrations followed by one-to-one instruction.¬?Bring an old towel and sturdy scissors or secateurs. Notes will be provided.

Macquarie 2010 Bicentenary Commemorations

From Governor's Demesne to Public Domain - a Walk in the Domain
Meet at the Friends?Äô Cottage
Friday 16 July, 10 am ?Äì 12 noon (approx.)

To celebrate the 200th anniversary of Governor Lachlan Macquarie and his contribution to the development of the Domain, Volunteer Guides Flora Deverall and J im Nicol will lead a walk to re-live the history of this surviving link with the beginning of European settlement in Eastern Australia. The walk will encompass plantings, statues, shrines and sculptures. Beginning in the Gardens with remnants from the Macquarie era the tour will take in Speakers?Äô Corner, the BurnsGarden, the Palm Grove, Hospital Road, and the recent Sound Wall plantings. The walk will conclude at the State Library of NSW where participants may choose to view the exhibition:The Governor: Lachlan Macquarie, 1810 to 1821.¬?Wear sensible walking shoes and weather protection.

National Tree Day They all ran wild!¬?

For a different spin on National Tree Day, Peter Cuneo, Manager?ÄìNatural Heritage at Mount AnnanBotanic Garden, will speak about the origins and ecology of the highly invasive African Olive and the program for controlling it and preserving the precious native woodlands. African Olive was introduced as a hedging plant during the mid 1800?Äôs and is now a serious environmental weed throughout western Sydney. The Friends have generously supported the African Olive control program at Mount Annan.

First Impressions:¬? Three Botanic Gardens in Southern China

Maiden Theatre, Royal Botanic Gardens Sydney
Since becoming Executive Director of the Botanic Gardens Trust six years ago, Dr Tim Entwisle has been invited to participate in celebrations, meetings, workshops and reviews at three of the larger botanic gardens in China. Explore with Tim the 900 ha Xishuangbanna Tropical Botanical Garden in south-western China, the steamy Wuhan Botanical Garden in inland eastern China, and the South China Botanical Garden in Guangzhou just 120 km north-west of Hong Kong. All three have plant collections and landscapes that rival those of the great botanic gardens of the world.

10 town and country gardens are open in the Armidale and Uralla Area. They range from small town gardens to sprawling country gardens; native through to traditional English cold climate gardens.
