Viola plants are commonly called Pansies and Violets, however these are mainly hybrids. A few Viola species are available and they do make worthwhile garden plants. These are excellent plants for a display of winter flowers and grow well both in containers and in the garden.
Available in both specimen pots as well as trays for mass planting, wholesale growers offer a wide range of Pansies through the year.
From the genus itself Violaceae, it is generally Viola hederacea that is offered by wholesale growers. Growing well in full sun to part shade this is a useful ground cover plant, also known as the native violet. Viola odorata and other varieties are also available.
However Violas also include what we call Violets and Pansies, and are available in punnets during the cooler months of the year.
They make excellent bedding plants and also grow well in containers and hanging baskets.
