WHOLESALE ERYTHRINA NURSERIES
Erythrina Crista-Galli is known as the Coral Cock Comb. A large shrub to small tree it is grown for the brilliant red flowers in spring.
This is a deciduous tree and although it can reach 6m in height it is often much lower growing.
Deep red flowers are a little ‘pea like’ and the tree does have some thorns.
Also known as the Coral Cockspur tree, this is a highly ornamental tree when in full flower and will grow in a range of climates ranging from tropical to cool temperate.
In many gardens it is pruned back very hard in winter to keep it as a small tree or shrub.
One of the issues with this very attractive tree is a tendency to self seed. This seems even more of a problem in warmer climates where in some areas it is a bit of a weed. The alternative s to look for other varieties that are said to be sterile.
Erythrina Varieties for the garden.
One cultivar Erythrina x bidwillii or ‘Bidwells Coral Tree’ is reputed to be a better flowering form it is also said to be sterile and will not self seed. Another is Erythrina x sykesii, also said to be sterile.
